TAIWAN’S SAFETY STANDARDS FOR RADIOACTIVE CONTAMINATION OR RADIATION FALLOUT IN FOOD
apan was hit by a 9.0 Richter scale earthquake and tsunami on March 11. In addition, in Fukushima, a nuclear power plant explosion occurred after the earthquake caused radiation leaks. While we pray for the Japanese people, we are also worried that Taiwan and Japan are so geographically close. Will the Japanese nuclear power plant radiation leaks have any impact on us? Can we have food imported from Japan?
Mr. Zheng Hung-Yi, the Director of Health said that in following the Food Sanitation Management Law Article 11, paragraph 2; the manufacture of, importing, processing, blending, packaging, transporting, selling, exporting, gift giving, or public display of food or food additives subject to fallout or radioactive contamination exceeding the “Safety Standards For Radioactive Contamination or Radiation Fallout In Food " are prohibited.
Mr. Zheng also stressed that the Atomic Energy Council has radiation detection centers around Taiwan, and the real-time radiation monitoring system will continue to strengthen the monitoring of environmental radiation, thus closely watching environmental radiation changes to ensure public safety.
According to international practice, it is prohibited to harvest livestock, agricultural and aquatic products. The Food and Drug Administration, Department of Health has been in close communication with its Japanese counterpart for information on harvesting and fishing in the areas around the Fukushima nuclear power plant. It is understood that Japan currently has no agricultural or aquatic product harvesting, fishing or export in the disaster areas.
The Food and Drug Administration will also continue to collect the latest international information, and keep in touch with other countries for the export of products from the Fukushima Prefecture as well as its neighboring Miyagi and Ibaraki Prefectures. They will enhance the monitoring and control of radioactive contamination and cooperate with the Atomic Energy Council for the monitoring of imported food.
Theme: The Result of Market Vegetable and Fruit Sample Test by the Health Bureau of Penghu County in November
To ensure inhabitants’ dietary safety, the Health Bureau of Penghu County goes monthly to every traditional market and supermarket to test randomly foods s0ld there. In November, the test of oranges, honey plum, kiwi, pear, apple, and guava on sale in Te-Hsing fruit shop indicated that there was no pesticide residue.
The Health Bureau of Penghu County reminds people that they should keep balanced diets and eat a variety of fruits and vegetables. To reduce the consumption of pesticide residue, in addition to selecting carefully reputable suppliers and buying seasonal vegetables and fruits, people should wash them carefully, peel and cook them. Methods like washing the root of vegetables divested of covering leaves, soaking them in water for 10 to 20 minutes, or flushing them with tap water 2 to 3 times all can reduce the residue of pesticide.
According to the 5th article of chapter 11 in the Act Governing Food Sanitation, together with the 1st article of chapter 31, the penalty for pesticide residue exceeding the safety level is elevated to NTD 60,000 to 3000,000. It also levies fines of NTD 30,000 to 150,000 on suppliers who dodge the sample test, or refuse or are not able to demonstrate the origin of sources. It’s suggested that suppliers record the origin of products in detail in order to trace illegal products, reducing the failure rate, and guarantee consumers’ dietary safety.
